About the project

Objective:

A development project that would change the complexion of a small town needed a creative approach to rally the community in support of independent retailers and its existing zoning laws. DeFazio Communications was hired by stakeholders in the community to defeat the development project.

Solution:

Built a community coalition known as the Conshohocken Revitalization Alliance (CRA). The goal of the CRA –  a grassroots network made up of local retailers, real estate professionals and residents – was to support development of the community consistent with the town’s revitalization plan. The program began with extensive community research, meeting one on one with influencers to learn their concerns. Initiatives included:

  • Creation of a Facebook group of over 900 members to share information and key messages online and updates via creative content and to generate conversation as well as organize meetings.
  • Door-to-door outreach for petitions that were included in letters sent to Borough Council to deny the project and support an alternative development created by CRA with the help of local planners.
  • Community forums produced with transportation experts positioning CRA as a trusted and influential civic group for the community.

Results:

Garnered impactful media coverage for events, including several spots on WCAU-TV (Philadelphia’s NBC affiliate), PhillyVoice, the Norristown Times Herald and regular coverage on the top-rated community blog MoreThanTheCurve. CRA became a voice for integrity in the community. As a result of the initiative, Borough Council rejected the developer’s proposal to rezone the site in a decisive 6 to 1 vote.
